Video processing and status
What happens after upload and how to read processing status.

After you upload a video file, cliply processes it before it is ready to tag. This page explains what happens during that window and how to interpret the status indicators.
What processing does
When a file upload completes, cliply queues a set of background tasks on the video:
- Validation — confirms the file is a readable video container
- Metadata extraction — reads duration, resolution, and codec information
- Thumbnail generation — creates preview images for the timeline and clip list
- Cover art — if the video has no custom poster, a colorful cover is generated automatically from the video name; upload your own from video settings to replace it at any time
- Storage indexing — registers the secure storage key so the player can request signed URLs
YouTube-linked videos skip this process entirely — they are ready to tag as soon as the URL is saved.
Status indicators
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Uploading | The file is still being transferred to storage |
| Processing | Background tasks are running — do not tag yet |
| Ready | The video is fully prepared and can be tagged |
| Error | Something went wrong — see below |
Processing time depends on file size and server load but is typically a few seconds to a couple of minutes for match-length recordings.
Can I tag while processing?
Wait until the status shows Ready before opening the workspace. Attempting to tag during processing may result in a blank player or missing timeline data.
If processing fails
An error status usually means one of the following:
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Unsupported file format | Re-encode to MP4/H.264 and re-upload |
| Corrupted file | Check the file plays correctly locally before re-uploading |
| Upload interrupted | Delete the video and try again; use a stable connection |
If the error persists after a retry, contact support with the video title and your organization name.
You do not need to stay on the page while processing runs. Come back when you are ready to tag — the status will have updated.
