Events
Track and review key events across a match.
On this page
Events are timestamped markers that log structured match moments — goals, substitutions, cards, fouls, and anything else you want to track as discrete occurrences rather than trimmed clips. They appear on the video timeline and in a dedicated event list, giving you a match chronology alongside your clip library.
Events vs. clips
| Events | Clips | |
|---|---|---|
| What they are | Point-in-time markers | Trimmed video segments |
| Created by | Pressing an event type button or hotkey | Pressing a tag button or trimming manually |
| Main use | Match chronology, quick reference | Review sessions, sharing, export |
| Have in/out points? | No | Yes |
Use events to log the shape of the match; use clips to show specific moments to your team.
Event types
Event types are the categories you define for your project — analogous to tag types for clips. Examples:
- Match events: Goal, Own goal, Penalty, Red card, Yellow card, Substitution
- Tactical events: Formation change, Pressing trigger, High line breach
- Phase markers: Start 1st half, Start 2nd half, Extra time
Each event type can have a label, a hotkey, a color, and an icon.
Logging events
Configure event types
In your project's settings, open the Event types section. Add the categories that are relevant to the match format you are analyzing.
Open the event controls during playback
In the workspace, the event controls panel sits alongside the buttons deck. It shows your configured event types as buttons.
Press a button at the right moment
Click an event type button (or its hotkey) during playback or live tagging. cliply records the timestamp and the event type.
Add a note
Optionally type a brief note on the event — the minute, the player involved, a quick observation. This is the event's own note line, and it's visible in the event list and in share links.
Working with the event list
The event list shows all logged events in chronological order. Click any event to jump to that moment in the video. Events can be:
- Filtered by type
- Edited to add or change a note
- Deleted if logged by mistake
Events are also visible on the video timeline as colored markers, giving you a visual overview of the match's structure.
An event's details panel
Click an event in the list to open its details panel, laid out the same way as a clip's:
- A time chip — nudge it with − / + (by your trim step), or drop it on the current playhead with the crosshair button
- Its type, spelled out with the type's color and icon
- Variants, zone (opens the pitch map), and players tagged to it
- A notes area underneath
Renaming, the full editor, adding to a deck and deleting stay on the row itself — double-click the name, use the row's icons, press Delete, right-click, or open quick actions with ⌘/Ctrl+Enter.
Notes on events
Beyond the single note line above, an event can hold a whole thread of notes, just like a clip. Add as many as you need, and mark each one Shared or Private:
- Shared notes show up on share links that include notes (or on any collaborative link)
- Private notes never leave the workspace — no share link shows them
In the workspace you see your own notes, and can edit or delete them; organization owners and admins see and moderate everyone's. An event with notes shows how many next to its name. Where you can't edit — a video saved for offline review, or a view-only role — clicking the event shows its notes to read. In the desktop app, the notes thread isn't available yet — the panel there still shows the single note line.
Use events to answer "when did things happen?" and clips to answer "what did it look like?" A tight pressing structure in the first twenty minutes shows up in the event chronology; the specific clip of the press collapsing is in the clip library.
