Field hockey video analysis software

How to analyze field hockey matches with cliply: penalty corner and outlet tags, clips for the squad, and the limits worth knowing before you start.

Analyzing a field hockey match takes three things: tagging plays while you watch, going back to them grouped by type, and showing them to the squad. cliply does all three in the browser, with a hockey tag panel you can change, and you can start for free.

What a hockey staff reviews and how it maps to tags

Field hockey is played in clear phases, and the deck separates them. On your side there are outlet, attack, shot, counter and penalty corner. On the opponent side there are defense, recovery, save, turnover, penalty corner against and goal against. Each key press creates a clip around that moment.

The penalty corner is the clearest case. The "Penalty corner" tag collects every one you attacked with and "Penalty corner against" every one you defended. Variants then qualify them: the "Drag-flick", the hit, the push, the deflection, the rebound or a set routine. That lets you see, for example, how you are being scored on from penalty corners against, or which routine works best for you.

The outlet is the other phase worth reviewing on its own. Tagging "Outlet" and "Turnover" separately lets you watch how the team builds from the back and where it breaks down. Match events such as quarter start and end, cards, timeout or substitution sit on the timeline so you can place every stretch.

The deck is a starting point: rename it, add or remove tags, change shortcuts and set how many seconds before and after the key press each clip keeps. A new organization gets it preloaded by sport. See Decks and catalog and Antagonist tags for how your own tags pair with the opponent's.

A match from start to finish

  1. Create a project and add the video: a YouTube or Vimeo link, a direct URL, or a file from your computer. See Upload videos.
  2. Tag with the keyboard or mouse. See Create clips.
  3. Filter by tag, reaction or player to review, for example, every penalty corner against.
  4. Draw on a frozen frame and build a collection with the plays for the team talk. See Drawing and telestration and Collections and playlists.
  5. Send a share link. Whoever receives it opens it in any browser, no account needed.

Tagging live from the sideline

Live tagging works on every plan, Free included. You can record an offline session in the browser, which helps when the pitch has no signal, and assign it to a project later. There is also a clock-only session for logging plays without a camera.

What else helps a hockey staff

  • The tactics board, with a field hockey pitch, pieces for two teams and free drawing. Useful for explaining an outlet or positioning on a penalty corner.
  • Presentations, which combine clips, tactical animations and images for a team talk.
  • XML import and export, the format most video analysis tools share, so what you already tagged elsewhere is not lost. See XML Inspector.
  • Clip export to MP4 for messaging. See Export video.

Which plan you need

Free allows one project and up to five videos, with tagging, drawing and read-only links. For unlimited projects and videos, the XML library and offline review, the step is Solo. Team adds staff members at a flat price. Current prices are on pricing and each plan is described in Plans and pricing.

When cliply isn't the right fit

  • If you need the full match uploaded to a server and kept there, that starts at the Club plan, or with the Cloud add-on on another plan. Otherwise the video stays on YouTube or Vimeo, or on your own device.
  • If several people must tag the same video at the same time in the same workspace, that is not available yet.
  • If you need automatic per-player positional data from the video (tracking), cliply does not generate it. Drawing markers follow a player within a clip, but they are for explaining a play, not measuring it.
  • If your club already uses another tool and only wants to keep it, cliply does not force a switch: you can import its XML files and decide later.

Try it with your own match

Open /try, paste a YouTube match link and tag it in the browser, no account needed. To compare tools, read How to choose sports video analysis software, and if your footage is on YouTube, Analyze a YouTube match. If you work in another sport, see rugby, rink hockey or football.
