How to analyze volleyball matches with cliply: serve, reception, spike and block as tags, clips shared by link with the squad, and the limits to know.

cliply lets a volleyball staff tag the match in the browser, review serves, receptions and spikes grouped by type, and send the clips to the squad by link. The deck comes set up for the sport and you can start for free.

What a volleyball staff reviews and how it maps to tags

Volleyball is analyzed through the chain of actions in each point: serve, reception, set and spike, with the block and the dig on the other side. On your side the deck has "Serve", "Reception", "Spike" and "Point won". On the opponent side it has "Block", "Dig" and "Point lost". Each key press creates a clip around that action.

"Serve" collects every serve in a set so you can see who the team targeted and how it went, and "Reception" lets you review how the team answered the opponent's serve. Reception conditions everything that follows, so it is the first thing worth reviewing when a set gets difficult.

Spikes are qualified with direction variants: "Line", "Cross" and "Tip". Filtering by "Spike" and "Line" shows where each attacker goes, and "Tip" lets you review when the touch works better than the hit. On the opponent side, "Block" and "Dig" show how the other team organized against each attack.

"Point won" and "Point lost" close each play, so filtering one and then the other lets you watch back to back how the key points of a set were decided. Match events include set start and end, timeout, substitution, challenge and injury, and sit on the timeline to place each set. See Events.

The deck has no rotation tag. If you want to review by rotation, you can create your own tags or variants, since the deck is editable: rename, add or remove tags and change shortcuts. See Decks and catalog and Antagonist tags.

A match from start to finish

  1. Create a project and add the video: a YouTube or Vimeo link, a direct URL, or a file from your computer. See Upload videos.
  2. Tag with the keyboard or mouse, live or afterwards. See Create clips.
  3. Filter by tag, for example every reception or every point lost.
  4. Draw on a frozen frame and build a collection for the team talk. See Drawing and telestration.
  5. Send a share link. Whoever receives it opens it in any browser, no account needed.

Live tagging works on every plan. If the gym has no signal, you can record an offline session and assign it to a project later.

Tactics board and presentations

The tactics board includes the volleyball court, with pieces for two teams and free drawing. It helps explain a reception formation or a defensive system. With presentations you combine clips, tactical animations and images in a single talk.

Which plan you need

Free allows one project and up to five videos. Solo, Team, Club and Enterprise add capacity. Current prices are on pricing and each plan is described in Plans and pricing.

When cliply isn't the right fit

  • If you need the full match uploaded to a server and kept there, that starts at the Club plan, or with the Cloud add-on on another plan. Otherwise the video stays on YouTube or Vimeo, or on your own device.
  • If you need automatic per-player or per-rotation statistics from the video, cliply does not generate them: you place the tags. Drawing markers follow a player within a clip, but they are for explaining the play, not measuring it.
  • If several people must tag the same video at the same time in the same workspace, that is not available yet.
  • If your club already uses another tool, you can import its XML files, the format most video analysis tools share, and decide later. See XML Inspector.

Try it with your own match

Open /try, paste a YouTube match link and tag it in the browser, no account needed. To compare tools, read How to choose sports video analysis software and Analyze a YouTube match. For other indoor sports, see basketball, handball or rink hockey.
