Rugby video analysis software
How to analyze rugby matches with cliply: scrums, lineouts, kicks and line breaks as tags, clips shared by link with the squad, and the limits to know.
On this page
cliply lets a rugby staff tag a match in the browser, go back to every scrum, lineout or kick grouped by type, and send the clips to the squad by link. The deck comes set up for rugby, works for both fifteens and sevens, and you can start for free.
What a rugby staff reviews and how it maps to tags
Rugby is analyzed by phases and by set pieces. On your side the deck has "Attack", "Try", "Line break", "Kick", "Scrum", "Lineout" and "Penalty won". On the opponent side it has "Defense", "Tackle", "Turnover", "Turnover won", "Penalty conceded" and "Try against". Each key press creates a clip around that action.
Set pieces are what comes up most in team talks. "Scrum" and "Lineout" collect every set piece in the match, and the variants "Won" or "Lost" qualify them. You can then watch the lineouts you lost back to back and look for whether the problem was the throw, the jump or the setup.
Kicks are qualified by intent: "Territorial", "Contestable", "At goal" or "Restart". A "Kick" clip with the "Contestable" variant lets you review how well the team contested the ball in the air. For open play, "Line break" and "Tackle" separate what broke the defense from what held it, and "Turnover" and "Turnover won" show where possession changed hands.
Match events such as try, conversion, penalty goal, drop goal, yellow or red card, substitution and injury sit on the timeline so you can place each stretch. See Events.
All of this applies to sevens too: the sevens deck is the fifteens deck, with scrum, lineout and the kick qualifiers, and only the lineup on the board differs. The deck can be edited if you work with both squads. See Decks and catalog.
A match from start to finish
- Create a project and add the video: a YouTube or Vimeo link, a direct URL, or a file from your computer. See Upload videos.
- Tag with the keyboard or mouse, live or after the match. See Create clips.
- Filter by tag, for example every own lineout or every contestable kick.
- Draw on a frozen frame and build a collection for the talk. See Drawing and telestration.
- Send a share link. Whoever receives it opens it in any browser, no account needed, which suits a large squad.
Live tagging works on every plan. You can record an offline session if the ground has no signal and assign it to a project later.
Tactics board and presentations
The tactics board includes the rugby pitch, sevens included, with pieces for two teams and free drawing. It helps explain a defensive line or a lineout setup. With presentations you combine clips, tactical animations and images in a single talk.
Which plan you need
Free allows one project and up to five videos. Solo, Team, Club and Enterprise add more capacity. Current prices are on pricing and each plan is described in Plans and pricing.
When cliply isn't the right fit
- If you need the full match uploaded to a server and kept there, that starts at the Club plan, or with the Cloud add-on on another plan. Otherwise the video stays on YouTube or Vimeo, or on your own device.
- If you need automatic positional or workload data for each player from the video, cliply does not produce it. Drawing markers follow a player within a clip, but they are for explaining, not measuring.
- If several people must tag the same video at the same time in the same workspace, that is not available yet.
- If your club already tags with another tool, you can import its XML files, the format most video analysis tools share, and decide later. See XML Inspector.
Try it with your own match
Open /try, paste a YouTube match link and tag it in the browser, no account needed. To compare tools, read How to choose sports video analysis software and Analyze a YouTube match. If your club has other sports, see field hockey or football.
